Adelaide, Outback cattle drive and Kangaroo Island
Our exclusive tour begins in Adelaide, where you’ll be met by your driver who will take you on a private tour of Adelaide, Glenelg and the Adelaide Hills. Tonight you’ll rest in 5 star luxury at the Hyatt Regency Adelaide. On day two of this adventure you’ll pick up your intermediate size rental car and head out for the leisurely drive through the Australia’s premier wine district, the Barossa Valley. You have time to stop and visit some of Australia’s most famous vineyards, before continuing your journey out to Parachilna, South Australia (population: 7).
Tonight you’ll dine under a canopy of stars on a menu inspired by renowned Australia chef Andrew Fiekle. Outback singer/songwriter John O’Dea will entertain you with his unique brand of Australia heritage music. You’ll stay overnight here at the award winning Prairie Hotel.
Get ready for a truly authentic Australian Outback experience, combining the rustic romance of cattle mustering, gourmet food and wine, native wildlife and the breath-taking Flinders Ranges - one of the most ancient, beautiful landscapes on earth. You’ll soon be ambling through the Australia outback on horseback – hearing about life as a drover (Australian for ‘cowboy’), feeling the sun on your back, seeing magnificent desert landscapes, and smelling the desert at dusk.
At Nilpena, a working cattle station on the edge of Lake Torrens, you’ll meet the drovers (cowboys) and be matched with your horse. You’ll love the place: it’s right on the edge of red sand dunes which sweep far away to the north; and to the east you’ll get panoramic views of the Flinders Ranges. You’ll be mustering 200 head of cattle. After your day in the saddle, you’ll freshen up in the Nilpena Shearer’s Quarters before enjoying sunset drinks around the campfire. For two amazing evenings, you’ll dine with the drovers in the historic Nilpena Woolshed (on a ‘slate floor’ that’s 550 million years old!) and weather permitting, you’ll also get to sleep under the stars in a swag – just like a ‘true blue’ drover.
When your cattle drive is over, head back into Adelaide, where you’ll drop your rental car at Adelaide Airport. You’ll fly to Kingscote on Kangaroo Island. The island is home to an amazing diverse array of sealions, fur seals, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, echidnas, platypus, goannas, hundreds of bird species (many rare or endangered), possums, bandicoots and even whales.
You'll stay at a deluxe B&B and in the morning, your full day small group tour of the island begins.
Your tour blends a range of wildlife experiences with an elegant barbeque at a private lunch site out in the bush. Get an introduction to Kangaroo Island Have a “cuppa” with some home-made cakes before taking a walk down a country track through tall Eucalyptus trees where koalas snooze overhead, or perhaps wake briefly for a feed.
At Seal Bay Conservation Park walk with your guide among Australian sealions on a beautiful sandy beach. Watch pups nursing, or playing in the surf, see old bulls bearing the scars of territorial disputes and learn about their unique breeding biology. The remainder of the afternoon is spent exploring more of the south east region of the Island with destinations and experiences chosen to reflect seasonal opportunities.
You'll fly back to Adelaide, where your South Australian adventure comes to an end!
