Tasmania is the perfect self drive destination in Australia, and this is the essential self drive itinerary. The adventure begins in Hobart, Tassie's capital city. You'll pick up a compact rental car with unlimited mileage. IN Hobart, spend 2 nights in the city in a 3 star hotel with harbour view room.
On day three head north to Bicheno. Here you'll spend 2 nights staying in a one bedroom apartment overlooking Diamond Island. Stroll the pure white sandy beach with the crispest clear water – to the north is the untouched grandeur of the Douglas Apsley National Park and to the south the village and Freycinet National Park.
From Bicheno, you'll head to the secluded bush setting in Cradle Valley on the edge of the World Heritage listed Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair National Park. You'll stay in a private, self-contained cottage, situated in the natural bushland. You are surrounded by native plants and wildlife. From your balcony you will probably see wallabies, pademelons, possums or currawong - it's all part of the 'wilderness' experience.
Your last night is spent in Launceston. Here you'll stay in an historic city hotel, within walking distance to the city's central business district.
